Grand Text Auto » PvP: Portal versus Passage →
This writer says that The Passage is a better game than Portal. I’m inclined to agree with some of his points.

XNA Games - GDC08
Microsoft announced yesterday that they’re making all XNA-developed games available for testing by anyone on Xbox Live. XNA shows a staggering amount of potential, so much so that many of the small demos shown at GDC of the XNA games look so much better than most of the junk currently released on XBLA. Upcoming games like Braid and Castle Crashers are proving that downloadable games can...

WatchWatch
Gameplay footage of Fez, an indie platformer and IGF finalist just recently shown at GDC08. You play as “Gomez, a 2D character exploring a 3D world,” a la Super Paper Mario or Crush. You can rotate the levels in 90° increments. This game would dominate as an XBLA release in the future. Bonus: the music owns.

Starbreeze Studios Working On Existing EA... →
Looks like Starbreeze will be “reinventing an existing franchise” for EA, whatever that means. I hope they get enough creative freedom to do with this game what they did with the existing franchises of Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness. And let’s hope it’s a violent one…

The Making Of ‘Wii Fit’ — The Complexity Of... →
The MTV Multiplayer blog has written up a nice article on the creation of Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board. Some of the more interesting points: Early prototypes of the Wii Balance board included rumble and a connection to the Wii remote. That definitely would’ve been interesting, but they claimed that the rumble motor wasn’t strong enough to feel it in the feet. The program...

Stuff White People Like →
Another good blog in the vein of Men Who Look Like Old Lesbians. Highlight: #38 - Arrested Development “If you are ever a white person’s house, and you see an orange box in their DVD collection, you should say “oh, you have Arrested Development, I love that show!” To which you will be offered a glass of wine, and perhaps an invitation to 80s night.”

Dubious Quality: A Few Questions →
Good post by Bill Harris regarding controversy over content in games and what developers/publishers might do to minimize the rampant nonsense that continues to come out of the mainstream media. Excerpt: So how do we defend sexism, and racism, and homophobia in games? Well, we don’t. I think it’s possible to defend the right of content creators to create content which we find...

Pwned by a database
Zac: I just found a row in our database with a row id of 13371337
Zac: I scrolled for like 3 minutes til I finally found it
Zac: I'm gonna set the tables so the auto numbers always start at 1337
and increment in 1337 steps
Zac: so every record is always some multiple of ELITE

Gamasutra - Understanding The Fun of Super Mario... →
Super Mario Galaxy is one of the most enjoyable games I’ve played in years, and I’m not even really a fan of platformers. I never really saw the appeal of Mario 64 when it came out, though I do appreciate what it did for gaming as a whole.

RPS Interview: PopCap on Casual, Peggle & Valve →
If you haven’t played Peggle yet, please do so now. PopCap Chief Creative Officer Jason Kapalka, on how their games play off of gamer “addiction psychology”: “There are some tricks and shortcuts we’ve learned… like, always have sound cues of rising pitch associated with combos, and never award points in increments of less than 10. These are often non-intuitive little...
