Interview with the creator of Scrubs and Spin City, Bill Lawrence:

You’re gonna be hard-pressed to be successful if you’re on a network and not partially owned by them, because they have no financial incentive to support you. The only creative changes I noticed… I tell everybody, but The Todd is not allowed to wear his thong anymore, because it’s the Disney company. Sorry man. So even like, in the Bahamas episode the other week, there’s a shot of him on the beach flexing, and they made us cut the shot in half. I’m like “Are you sure? This guy’s been in a thong 900 times.”

Rock Band 2: Hands-On Preview | The A.V. Club »

The Onion has a nice preview of Rock Band 2.

Highlights:

  • Flexible Band World Tour — any number of people on or offline can join a band.
  • “Party safe” mode keeps newbies from backing everybody out when you’re trying to start a song.
  • Create setlists on the fly.
  • “Whole album” play mode.
  • More RPG-like elements in Band World Tour.
  • Custom logos for your band.
  • Ten new announced songs.
  • All 80+ new tracks use master recordings.
  • Drum kit improvements — metal-reinforced pedal; quieter, velocity-sensitive pads; wireless support.
  • Drum training program with a library of basic beats and rhythms, and different kit styles like electronic, vintage, and trashy.
  • Freeplay mode where you can rip mp3s to your console and play over them.

Ho. Ly. Shit. That’s a few new features. And each one of them sounds like it should be a massive improvement to the original platform.

Harmonix also mentions a “very ambitious indie initiative” they have in development now to get more indie bands to the platform. Maybe we’ll start seeing some Wolf Parade, Aqueduct, Pinback, etc.

Patton Oswalt actually tries out the KFC Famous Bowl. He once called it “a failure pile in a sadness bowl.” Hilarity ensues: “The gravy, which I remembered as being tangy and delicious in my youth, tasted like the idea of blandness, but burned and then salted to cover the horrid taste. The mashed potatoes defiantly stood their ground against the gravy, as if they’d read The Artist’s Way and said, “I’m going to be boring and forgetful in my own potato-y way!” The corn tasted like it had been dunked in fake-corn-flavored ointment, and the popcorn chicken, breaded to the point of parody, was like chewing a cotton sleeve that someone had used to wipe chicken grease off their chin. The cheese had congealed. Even in the heat and steam of the covered Famous Bowl, it had congealed. I stabbed it with the tines of my spork and it all came up in one piece. I nibbled an edge, had a vision of a crying Dutch farmer, and put it down.” (For those who don’t know, the Famous Bowl is a bowl of gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, breaded chicken, and cheese. A plastic bowl of coronary.)
