Mozy asks “How large is a petabyte?”
Side note, Mozy is a fantastic service and I’ve been a paid user for a couple years now. I have about 90 GB backed up to their servers.
N’Gai proposes that an online game save file storage mechanism should be provided by the console manufacturers. I’ve been demanding this since the launch of the Xbox Live service! It seems inexcusable to me that this doesn’t yet exist, even though I know the reason: they want to upsell you external storage.
And yet that reasoning isn’t entirely sound. As N’Gai says, they could charge you a fee and many gamers would gladly pay it. Hell, I’m already paying for Xbox Live, and my Hotmail account has gigabytes of unused storage… Why don’t you reallocate some server space, Microsoft? However, the ideal system would be one that was cross-platform, so my Wii, 360, and DS saves could all sync to a single server.
His idea of an Apple “Time Machine”-like visualization is great: “a graphical display of our progress through every one of our games and let us jump back in at any point in a particular playthrough.”
