The Iceland volcano* in timelapse.

“So I saw all of these mediocre pictures of that volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the name of, so I figured I should go and do better. But the flights to get over took forever as expected (somewhat). 4 days after leaving I finally made it, but the weather was terrible for another 4. Just before leaving it got pretty good for about a day and a half and this is what I managed to get.

* I am so far from actually being able to pronounce its name that I don’t even have the right to type it.

After a couple of map related posts, I found this video of the new stuff Microsoft’s doing with Bing Maps. It looks like the Live Labs guys have even integrated Photosynth photos into the Streetside interface. really dig the seamless display of constellations when you pan up to the sky.

The StreetView team goes to Whister!

For the Vancouver Olympics, the StreetView guys have been hittin’ the slopes to get imagery from snowmobiles. The little StreetView guy is even a skier!

The Big Picture remembers Apollo 11 on its 40th anniversary with some stunning photography.

I like this one of Buzz Aldrin, this one showing the VAB’s massive size, and of course, the Earthrise.

Photowalking

I started this other Tumblr to catalog my mission to learn photographic technique. I’ve been posting some examples on there. Framing and composition are my real goals at first (things I can do with any camera), then I’ll move on to more advanced techniques that require manual control. I’ve been taking shots and looking at the EXIF data to see what adjustments the camera is making to the ISO/aperture settings under specific conditions. Seems like a good way for a technical person like myself to learn.

Colette jokes that I’m competing with her, but believe me, she’s got no competition from me. I don’t have that eye that she’s got.

Just bought one of these bad boys for Colette.

When I first saw the pricing on these DSLR cameras, I thought it was insane. Once you get to play with one, you really see how worth it that pricing is.
